Designing for users

Wiki Gardening 201: Designing wikis for effective use is informed by the same guidelines for the design of new software (see Tools and resources for some recommended resources).

Basic design steps

  • Create a wiki task force.
  • Identify several specific goals and accompanying user scenarios that make the goals practical and implementable.
  • Write specifications: vision/scope, target audience, projected outcomes, time, cost, key players, tools, training.
  • Write a concise plan and procedure for implementation.
  • Get user feedback: measure, assess, adjust, and do it over again incrementally.
  • Although not specifically wiki, an example of this process is the UAA/APU Consortium Library's Library Website Redesign Project Summer 2005.
